Marine Biology Courses:

collecting tripHopkins Marine Station offers a Marine Biology curriculum in the Winter, Spring, and Summer Quarters. These courses (open to students in all majors) expand the coverage of subjects basic to all biological and environmental sciences and provide upper-level undergraduate and graduate students with courses in a variety of topics related to life in the oceans.

In some respects, the curriculum at Hopkins is analogous to attending one of Stanford's overseas campuses: students take up residence in Pacific Grove and spend an entire quarter studying aspects of biology that are not available on the main campus.

THE 2009-10 SCHEDULE
(grayed out courses taught alternate years)

AUTUMN QUARTER

BIO 3 Frontiers in Marine Biology (1 units) Somero (taught on main campus)
SOPHCOLL 10SC Natural History, Marine Biology and Research (2 units) Thompson

WINTER QUARTER
- Deadline for application is November 15, 2009
BIOHOPK 161H/261H Invertebrate Zoology (5 units, lab) Watanabe
BIOHOPK 163H/263H Oceanic Biology (4 units) Denny, Somero
BIOHOPK 164H/264H Marine Botany (5 units, lab) Connor
BIOHOPK 166H/266H Molecular Ecology (5 units, lab) Palumbi
BIOHOPK 170H/270H Topics in Marine Biology (1 unit) Staff
BIOHOPK 172H/272H Marine Ecology (5 units, lab) Micheli
BIOHOPK 187H/287H Sensory Ecology (2 units) Thompson
BIOHOPK 275H Synthesis in Ecology (2 units) Micheli
The Winter Quarter curriculum provides an excellent preparation for the Spring courses, and the two quarters taken together provide a student with a unique opportunity for in-depth study of life in the oceans.
