The Complete Guide to Marine & Coastal Studies at Stanford:
(Compiled by Stuart Thompson, updated Winter 2009)
Stanford offers a great variety of undergraduate courses emphasizing marine biology and marine and coastal environments but as yet, there is not a Marine Science Major. Instead the courses are housed in various departments and programs, and somewhat difficult to find. The "Complete Guide" attempts to ease that problem by listing all of the courses in one place, grouped by the quarter in which they are offered and by department. The guide is updated yearly in the fall. Some courses are cross-listed for credit in several departments, and we note that where possible, although it is still important to consult your Departmental Advising Office to make sure you can obtain credit toward your major. Even if a course is not cross-listed, you may be able to take it for credit by petition. The Biology Department and the Earth Systems Program both offer major tracts in the marine sciences.
